Teaser:  She picked up the telephone extension and carefully pressed out the direct dial number, pausing for the briefest moment before entering the last one. At once the receiver pressed to her ear seemed to amplify the beat of her pulse into a rapid drumbeat. She kept a tenuous hold on her confidence as she heard the line connect and the telephone at the other end ring out. The second ring sprouted a doubt. The third ring watered it. The fourth saw it take root. She allowed the phone to ring once more before she started to move the handset back toward its cradle. It had almost made it when she heard a man's voice.

Rather than suck the wetness from his finger, he wiped it on his trousers, not taking any chance he should be hoist with his own petard. He pushed the glass across the table to where it would be perfectly placed in front of his intended victim when she retook her seat. If she drank it, she would no doubt end up like Heather - violated and abandoned in some filthy alley, covered in her own vomit and her memory so screwed up she couldn't remember her own name - or worse. It had to happen sooner or later. These things always escalated.
